The Wise Men Begin Their Journey

The Wise Men Begin Their Journey

Santa Explains How The Wise Men Began Their Journey

Ho ho ho! So that magnificent star was blazing away in the eastern sky — and far across the world, those wise scholars I told you about made a rather bold decision. They were going to follow it.

Now think about what that actually meant, my friends. These were important men. Learned men. Men with comfortable homes, respected positions, and busy schedules. They could very easily have looked up at that star, nodded thoughtfully, made a note of it in their charts, and gone right back to their warm dinners.

But they didn't. They packed their bags, organized their caravans, gathered their gifts, and set off on a long and difficult journey to find a newborn King they had never met, in a country they did not know, simply because a star told them He had been born.

That, my friends, takes a special kind of faith. And a special kind of curiosity, too.

Now Santa knows all about long journeys — I cover an awful lot of ground myself, as you well know. But I've got flying reindeer and a magic sleigh, and I'm home before the cocoa goes cold. The wise men had camels. Slow, lumpy, grumpy camels. And the road ahead of them stretched on for many hundreds of miles, across deserts and hills and who knows what else.

This wasn't a quick weekend trip. Scholars believe their journey may have taken a very long time — weeks, perhaps months, perhaps even longer. Day after day of dusty travel, sleeping under the stars, following that one bright light across the sky, trusting it would lead them somewhere worth all the trouble.

And they brought gifts! They didn't show up empty-handed. Oh no, these were thoughtful, generous men. They carefully selected treasures fit for a King and carried them the entire way. We'll talk more about those gifts a little later — and let me tell you, they were rather unusual presents for a baby.

But here's what I want you to notice about the wise men. They were willing to go the distance. They were willing to leave the comfort of home and travel into the unknown because they believed something wonderful was waiting at the end of the road. They were seekers. They were searchers. They were the kind of people who, when they sense that something true and important is out there, simply must go and find it for themselves.

The shepherds ran a few fields over to the stable. The wise men crossed half the known world. But you know what? Both of them got up and went. Near or far, short trip or long, what mattered was that they followed the light when they saw it.

So this Christmas, if you feel something tugging at your heart, calling you toward something good and true — be like the wise men. Don't just admire it from your armchair. Pack your bags. Begin the journey. The very best things in life are worth traveling for.

Merry Christmas, everyone! Ho ho ho!
